A town, a municipality, a border, an island resort…whatever you want to call it, Ayamonte deserves your full attention. Located on the banks of the Guadiana River (Europe’s second longest) which separates the Algarve from Spain, Ayamonte is an absorbing destination, displaying characteristics of the two nations yet completely unique and, as a result, a popular tourist destination in the summer.
A relatively new suspension bridge now crosses the river and connects the countries, an addition that has stemmed the flow of traffic that would traditionally pour into Ayamonte as motorists headed for the only previous crossing – a car ferry across the narrowest point. Today, the ferry still runs, and provides an agreeable, inexpensive alternative to crossing the river.
The centre of town has numerous designated ‘car free’ zones, making it a pleasant place for a stroll around. Holidaymakers should certainly make provisions to visit the Plaza de la Laguna for a fresh lunch; the Iglesia de San Salvador for excellent views towards Portugal; and Plaza de la Coronacion for its vibrant café culture. Due to the town’s beauty, location and atmosphere, it can get pretty busy in the summer months, but it is also worth a visit at any time of the year.
